Job Title: Fieldbank Manager
Location: Ibadan

Responsibilities
Successful candidate will among other things perform the following duties:


  • To effectively and efficiently manage operations of the Genetic Resources Center (GRC) fieldbank including staff and resources;

  • To manage the conservation and characterization of GRC clonal crops in the field particular cassava, yam and Musa to a high standards;

  • To assist in the achievement of GRC performance targets and to contribute to the development of GRC as a whole;

  • To liaise effectively with the in vitro Genebank of GRC;

  • To ensure the fieldbank follows best practice and in a modern fieldbank particularly in areas of barcoding, data management and mechanization;

  • To liaise with other units within IITA particularly breeders on the evaluation of germplasm;

  • To exist in the planning and implementation of collecting missions;

  • To undertake capacity development of NARS and other partners;

  • Assist in the development and implementation of research activities involving the fieldbank.

Qualifications


  • M.Sc in Plant Science, Plant Genetics, Crop Production, Agronomy or related field with 5 years’ experience performing same role.

Competencies
The ideal candidate must have:


  • Good Communication skill;

  • Good field research management skills

  • Good field data collection and management skills

  • Good ability to speak more than one Nigeria language.

Job Title: Head of Data and Information Management Unit

Job Descriptions


  • IITA is recruiting a Head for the newly established Data and Information Management Unit. IITA is investing in order to be at the cutting edge of ICT and fully explore the potential of data and information management and its utilization/or use in agricultural research for development.

  • We are thus looking for a highly experienced, motivated and visionary leader that can develop a strong, dynamic and efficient data and information management unit that will support, inspire and be well-integrated with the research teams as well as with other administrative support units.

  • The Head of the unit reports to the Deputy Director General for Research for Development (R4D).

Position Responsibilities
The mandate of the unit includes:


  • ICT – hardware and infrastructure

  • Development of and support for administrative databases and financial management information system (Oracle is the current solution)

  • Management of institute repositories (e.g. bibliography, crop databases, spatial data, genetic resources, images etc)

  • Implementation and management of institute web-based platform

  • Leadership and support for transition to and full implementation of open access/open data

  • Support to scientists in data management and data analysis

  • Digital knowledge management

Educational Qualifications


  • The candidate should have a minimum of MSc or equivalent degree in relevant area

Core Competencies:


  • At least 10 years experience in the area of data and information management

  • Expertise in one or several of the unit’s mandate areas

Job Title: Communication Specialist
Location: Abuja, Nigeria

Reporting Line: The Communication Specialist will report to the Managing Director of the ATTC Project.


Position Responsibilities


  • Lead the development and implementation of the communication strategy for the project to improve its visibility.

  • Support the manufacturing and distribution companies of Aflasafe to develop and promote the aflasafe brand.

  • Support the awareness creation component of the project.

  • Develop and implement communication plans and campaigns to support ATTC project activities, and promote results and impact among investors/donors, partners, beneficiaries, and the general public.

  • Lead all public events organized by the project such as launches, business meetings, products presentations, networking events.

  • Capture and write up stories about ATTC work for a range of stakeholders and platforms in various formats including video, radio, stills, website and print publications.

  • Generate/contribute written content and provide editing and quality control in the production of various publications and project documents such as progress reports, newsletters, annual highlights, R4D Review, among others

  • Plan, edit and design a variety of print products/ publications using desktop publishing tools.

  • Regularly monitor and report on website analytics to inform digital strategies online.

  • Redesign the Aflasafe website, enrich content, provide editorial support and offer guidance to a widening pool of website contributors.

  • Create and manage the project’s social media channels, uploading information and materials; monitoring comments and giving feedback.

  • Mentor and train program staff in a variety of communications and digital media skills (e.g. social media, writing blogs, editorial style and guidelines, brand).

Educational Qualifications


  • The candidate should have a Master’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Media Arts.

Core Competencies:


  • 5+ years of professional experience in corporate, or developmental communication; direct experience of working in private sector preferred.

  • Exceptional writing and editing skills.

  • Relevant experience with website production and maintenance, digital media production and management, and design.

  • Relevant experience in the development and promotion of brands.

  • Experience in designing and organizing high level business and advocacy/policy events.

  • Good oral and written communication in French is an advantage.

Job Title: International Trials Manager II
Location: Ibadan, Oyo

Responsibilities
Successful candidate will among other things perform the following duties:


  • Serve as a manager for the support of project building and sustainable Integrated Cassava Seed Systems in Nigeria (BASICS);

  • Contribute in designing, planning and implementing of project activities for the breeders seed and quality seed components including multiplication of pre-basic seed, design and running on-station and on-farm demand create trials as well as on-station experiments to demonstrate the benefits of using clean cassava stems;

  • Contribute to the development, data collection, curation and analysis of all data of IITA’s involvement in the BASCIS project including multiplication production, inventory and cost information, certification and stem sales records, and experiments to improve multiplication methods;

  • Assist with publishing research output in peer-reviewed international journal articles;

  • Implement the SAH rapid multiplication system for cassava in Nigeria at IITA and backstop its implementation with other partners including NRCRI and a private processor;

  • Implement and ensure quality seed production and seed certification for cassava with national partners including associated record keeping;

  • Track seed flows in all stages of multiplication from pre-basic, basic and commercial seed stages;

  • Organize commercial stem transactions at all stages including pricing, payment and accounting of transactions;

  • Contribute to project monitoring and evaluation;

  • Provide technical support to National Agricultural Research and Extension System and commercial seed producers the regions of project operations;

  • Contribute in the development and dissemination of training documents (flyers, newsletters, posters, training and extension manual etc.);

  • Liaise between other projects with similar objectives to ensure the coordination of related activities;

  • Facilitate hosting of RTB staff at IITA;

  • Perform other duties as needed and requested by the supervisor.

Qualifications


  • M.Sc. in Agronomy, Plant Breeding, Crop Production or related discipline. Minimum of 12 years relevant experience performing similar role. Agricultural economics or agric business management experience will be an added advantage.

  • Very good knowledge on plant pathology; theory and application of diagnostic methods (such as ELISA and PCR); vegetative propagation of crops; concepts of plant disease control; production of healthy planting material; and seed quality certification.

  • Demonstrable supervisory experience (lab/field).

Job Title: Research Supervisor (Seed Multiplication)

  • Assist in planting, maintenance, data collection, harvesting and post-harvest handling of roots and stems from variety trials on-station and on-farm;

  • Assist with stem sales of pre-basic seed include keeping records of sales and facilitating payment and deposit of revenue from stem sales;

  • Participate in training of technicians and partners on methods of cassava stem multiplication;

  • Assist in supervising subordinate staff on field, laboratory and screenhouse activities;

  • Assist in providing technical backstopping to cassava seed multipliers,

Qualifications
